Reordering Project News 2018

by Chris Young

January 2018 (from the Journal)
  • The reordering should be complete and services resumed in church
  • The organ may not be working again, so here is a brief history of organ installations at St John's for interest
  • The Church's first organ was probably installed in 1836 taking over from a small band of musicians at services
  • Derek Shorrock's Church Guide notes that the last purchase of strings was made in 1834 and a bass viola was sold in 1836
  • Major alterations were made in 1883-4 by J E Minns, an organ builder of national reputation based in Taunton.
  • A new organ, again by Minns was installed in 1905.
  • In 1935 a major renovation was undertaken by Osmond's . George Osmond had been the General Manager at Minn's and took over the business on the sae site.
  • In 1969 a major renovation of the organ was undertaken by Osmond's, maintaining the Church's link with the firm from 1883. Osmond's ceased trading in the 1980's.
  • The console is now being updated and will be linked to the pipes using a telemetry system via a six-core cable, rather than the two huge fifty-core cable loos that the 1969 system used.
  • the console will return to its previous location but there are now connection points, like a telephone socket in the back of the Nave and the North Aisle so that the console could be sited away from the Chancel.
  • I am hopeful that the organ will be working again before Christmas but that is by no means certain.
  • Thanks to all who respond to my request for contributions to this work which has so far provided about half of the £17,000 needed.
  • If you are still thinking that this is a worthy cause but haven't donated yet, now would be a very good time. If you tell us that this is for the 'Organ Fund' it will be used only for this purpose.
